Connected Speech in English: Why You Cannot Hear the Words
The complaint is universal: I know these words on paper and cannot hear them in speech. The reason is that English words do not keep their dictionary shape in a sentence. They merge, lose sounds and change sounds depending on what is next to them.
There are only about five patterns, and knowing them changes both your listening and your speaking.
Linking: words run together#
When one word ends in a consonant and the next begins with a vowel, English joins them into what sounds like a single word.
- “an apple” sounds like “a napple”.
- “pick it up” sounds like “pi ki tup”.
- “turn it off” sounds like “tur ni toff”.
- “a lot of it” sounds like “a lo to vit”.
This alone accounts for a large share of the “I could not hear the word boundaries” experience. The boundaries genuinely are not there.
Elision: sounds disappear#
In clusters, English drops sounds that are awkward to produce quickly — most often t and d between consonants.

These are not sloppy. Newsreaders and university lecturers do all of them; the alternative sounds unnaturally deliberate.
Assimilation: sounds change to fit#
A sound shifts to become more like its neighbour, which is why familiar words can sound wrong.
- “ten bikes” becomes “tem bikes” — n moves towards the b.
- “good boy” becomes “goob boy”.
- “did you” becomes “dijoo”.
- “got you” becomes “gotcha”.
- “would you” becomes “wudja”.
The d + y combination is worth learning as a set. It appears in a huge proportion of everyday questions.
Weak forms: the schwa takes over#
Function words have a strong form and a weak form, and the weak form is what you actually hear almost all of the time.

“Fish and chips” is “fish n chips”. Learners listening for the full “and” hear a gap and lose the sentence.
How to use this#
- Start with listening. Take a 30-second clip and transcribe it exactly as you hear it, not as you know it is written.
- Compare your transcript with the real text and mark every place a sound vanished or changed.
- Choose one pattern — linking is the easiest — and listen only for it for a week.
- Then produce it. Take ten sentences and deliberately link, elide and weaken.
- Do not try to sound casual. These patterns appear in formal English too; you are learning the language, not slang.
Two weeks of this typically produces a step change in listening comprehension, which surprises learners who assumed their problem was vocabulary.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I understand written English but not spoken English?
Because spoken English does not preserve the written shape of words. Linking removes word boundaries, elision deletes sounds, assimilation changes them, and weak forms reduce most small words to a schwa. Your vocabulary is fine; you are searching for sound patterns that are not in the signal.
Should I speak with connected speech or pronounce every word fully?
Use it. Fully separated words sound unnatural and, counterintuitively, are harder for native listeners to process because the rhythm is wrong. Start with linking, which is the easiest and most useful, and let the rest come from imitation rather than rules.
Is gonna, wanna, gotta bad English?
They are standard spoken forms, not slang, and they appear in the speech of professors, lawyers and news presenters. What is non-standard is writing them, outside of dialogue or informal messages. Say them and do not type them.
